This book is about a young girl who lives with her mother and grandmother. She has never known her father, and her family is poor. But she still feels blessed because of the love her family shares. As the new school year aproaches, Belle hears that there are some black kids who will be attending. On the first few days of school, Belle watches at parents hold up signs and verbally abuse the children because of their skin color. As the year progresses, Belle is one of the only children who is nice to the black kid in her class, Darryl. Belle learns that skin color really doesn't matter when it comes to being friends. I enjoyed this book because it was intriguing to see the main character mature so much as the story went on.
