"Tis easier to suppress the first desire than to satisfy all that follow it."
(1) To me, this quote is saying that desires can quickly become an addiction, making it very hard to stop giving in to said desires. (2) For example, when I was trying to save money to buy my Ipod, I failed the first few times because I would buy a little thing here, a little thing there, and soon I hadn't saved any of that last paycheck. I realized that if my plan was going to succeed, I had to save it all, because I couldn't handle budgeting in order to purchase an Ipod, as I would become "addicted" to my shopping habit. I've heard that for most people, this is true, although there are those frugal few who easily have a hold on their finances. (3) I totally agree with Benjamin Franklin's saying, because I, myself, have found it true many times in my life. If you just say "no" to the first desire, the end result comes much more quickly.
