2010 Second Quarter Reading List
1) McCormick, Patricia. Sold. New York: Hyperion, 2006.
This book is about a young girl who lives in Nepal. Her step-father, who is addicted to gambling, sends her off to be a prostitute in the city. The worst part is that Lakshmi is only 13, too young to understand what's happening. She thinks she is going to be a maid so she can send money home to her family. When she realizes what they want her to do, Lakshmi wants no part of it. But after being starved for a while, she knows she must do what "Auntie" tells her. (272 pages)
2) Golden, Arthur. Memoirs of a Geisha: a Novel. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1997.
This book is about 9 year old Chiyo, and her transformation from child to woman. She and her sister are sold into slavery by their father after their mother died. She becomes good friends with the Chairman, who uses a well known geisha to turn Chiyo into the beautiful geisha Sayuri. (512 pages)
3)Giles, Gail. Shattering Glass. Brookfield, Ct.: Roaring Brook, 2002.
Simon Glass is a regular nerd. Rob and his "posse" normally picks on him. Then Rob, the leader of the pack, decides that they are going to give Glass a makeover to make him popular. As the story goes on, and Glass begins to grow more popular than him, Rob knows he has to put a stop to it. You'll never guess what he does. (215 pages)
4)Anderson, Laurie Halse. Wintergirls. New York: Viking, 2009.
Lia and Cassie had been friends forever, and over time, they both developed an eating disorder. Although they aren't friends anymore at age 18, Cassie calls Lia more than 30 times on the night of her death. This guilt, mixed with her constant calorie watching/eating disorder, sends Lia on a downward spiral. (288 pages)
5)Oliver, Lauren. Before I Fall. New York: Harper, 2010.
Sam Kingston is popular, pretty, and has a hottie boyfriend. She knows on the inside that her whole life is just a mold, fake. But why should she care? She's cool. One night, coming home from a party with a car full of friends, there is a terrible accident. Sam thinks she is dead, until she wakes up and starts going through the exact same day she did before. The same car wreck happens, so she "dies" again. But she still wakes up and lives the same day again. As the book goes on, Sam, realizing she can do whatever she wants, smokes marijuana for the first time and seducing her hot teacher. But finally, she realizes that this is happening to her for a reason. And she must figure out why. (480 pages)

In this book, Janie Hannagan and her boyfriend Cabe use Janie's dream-catching ability to try and catch a sexual predator in their school. When kids in her classes fall asleep, Janie tries to see if they are dreaming of any useful information. It's in this book where Janie has to make the decision of helping the town, or saving her own health before it's too late. (272 pages)

2010 First Quarter Reading List
1) Albom, Mitch. The Five People You Meet in Heaven. New York: Hyperion, 2006.
This book is about an 83 year-old man named Eddie who dies in a freak accident and goes to Heaven. There he meets 5 people whom his life affected in a very important way, although some of them he never personally knew. As you find out, every person has a story to tell, and a lesson to share. (198 pages)
2) Anderson, Laurie Halse. Fever 1793. London: Hodder Children's, 2002.
This book is about a girl named Mattie who is living in Philadelphia when a horrible sickness called yellow fever hits. When her mother comes down with it, Mattie and her elderly grandfather must flee to another town to avoid catching it. This book is an excellent example of how we must all stick together and help each other in bad times, as the characters in this book do. (243 pages)
3) Collins, Suzanne. The Hunger Games. New York: Scholastic, 2008.
This book takes place in the future, where 2 tributes from each of the 12 districts are chosen to go on something called the Hunger Games, a televised fight to the death, which all citizens are required to watch. When her younger sisters’ name is called, Katniss Everdeen steps in her place to fight. Katniss’ partner, Peeta, is a young man who Katniss has been around her whole life, but doesn’t really know personally. As the book continues, Katniss finds herself having to rely on Peeta and herself more than ever. This book is perfect for anyone who loves action-packed adventures that keep you on the edge of your seat. (384 pages)
4) Flake, Sharon. The Skin I'm in. New York: Jump at the Sun, 2007.
Seventh-grader Maleeka finds herself being taunted every day by the children in her class at school. If it is not about the color of her skin, it is about her homemade clothes. Then a new teacher, Ms. Saunders, comes to school. She has a horrible white scar that covers a whole side of her face. Although she and Maleeka do not get along at first, Miss Saunders ultimately teaches Maleeka how to love the skin she’s in. (176 pages)
5) Noël, Alyson. Radiance: a Novel. New York: Square Fish/St. Martin's Griffin,

Riley and her parents have a car accident and all of them die. They go to the afterlife, called Here, and continue life just as normal. Same dog, same parents. She meets Bohdi, who is to be her guide who teaches her everything she needs to know. She is assigned the jobs of soul catchers, which helps souls rest peacefully and pass along to Here. This book is good for anyone who is interested in hearing on author’s view of what the afterlife is like. (192 pages)
6) Peck, Richard. The Teacher's Funeral: a Comedy in Three Parts. New York: Dial, 2004.
This book is set in Indiana in 1904. Russell Culver is ecstatic that the teacher of their one-room schoolhouse passes away. Everyone thinks that maybe the school board will decide to tear the building down. However, to Russell’s horror, they hire his older sister, Tansy, to take the place of schoolteacher. You can follow all of the shenanigans that the boys pull in this hilarious story.

Connecting to Heaven
I can connect to the five people you meet in heaven because in our world today, everything we do in our lives affect the people around us. In other words, we have to be careful of what we are doing in our day-to-day lives.
This book is about a man named Eddie who is tragically killed in a work-related accident where he was in the process of saving a young girls life from being taken. Eddie went to Heaven, not knowing what had happened. He eventually met five people whom his life affected in a drastic way. Although he didn’t realize it at the time, his actions eventually ended each persons life.
For example, one day as a small boy, Eddie was playing with a ball in his yard. He accidentally threw a ball into the street, running after it immediately. A car zoomed past and swerved to miss the child. The shock of the almost-accident affected the man so bad that he went on to have a heart attack while driving, bringing his life to an end that day.
This tragedy showed me that even though he wasn’t aware of it, Eddie caused an accident that resulted in a man losing his life. We must be careful of what we are doing in our lives!
At another instance, Eddie meets his wife in Heaven, who had passed away before him. She was once in a car accident cause when she was trying to persuade Eddie out of the horse races before he lost all of his money. That one accident didn’t kill her, but injuries from it eventually did.
This misfortune showed me that sometimes our bad choices not hurt only ourselves, but others also.
In conclusion, this book made me realize that the smallest things we do can affect others in the biggest ways.
